Nearer to the opening of the film, the distributor launches a main campaign poster. Here is the main poster for STAR TREK.

  • Look at the title graphics for the film. What does the graphic style tell you about the film STAR TREK? Be as specific as you can in your answer and include all the elements mentioned above. It may help you to consider what other films you have seen with similar title graphics.
  • Look carefully at the poster for the film. What is shown in the poster? Be as detailed as possible.
  • How did you use prior knowledge of the following to help you answer these questions?
    Historical events / prequels / TV series / books / games/ other films you have seen? This type of cross-referencing between different media is called intertextuality.
  • Look again at the main campaign poster carefully and then answer the following questions:
    • Describe the ways in which the images shown in the posters are similar and how they are different. How do the images on the poster give us an idea of what the film will be about?
    • What do you think the genre of this film is? Give reasons for your answer.
    • How does the poster link in with the messages of the trailers?
    • What do you think the ‘unique selling point’ (USP) of this film is?
