Clip three: The language of debate

In this clip from a language lesson, the sentence François writes on the board causes controversy amongst the students.

  1. In the opening exchange between Souleymane and François, how resistant is the student to his teacher’s suggestions? How satisfactory is this exchange for both parties
  2. What problems do the students claim to have with their teacher’s use of language, and how do they present their views?
  3. Would you say this is a debate or a conflict? How controlled is the situation – who has the upper hand?

Clip four: questions of sport

  1. At what point would you say this ‘debate’ becomes an argument?
  2. Would you have expected the teacher to act differently in this situation? Explain your answer.
