Scene 2: A refectory at the boarding school. It is Sandra’s first morning at the school. As the camera tracks back we follow the progress of a trolley of bowls of porridge as it leaves the kitchen (staffed exclusively by black people). The trolley leads us into the refectory where a teacher is delivering a Bible story and providing a short homily (moral lecture). The text is from Mark’s gospel and concerns the healing by Christ of a leper: "And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. and Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed."
