Protestantism

Afrikaners were largely members of the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa.  Its doctrines were an offshoot of the kind of Protestantism of the earliest Dutch settlers in South Africa who began arriving and settling on the Cape in the mid-17th Century.  It owed its origins to Calvin – a theologian who developed a particularly harsh and puritanical version of Protestantism.
