The scene in the kitchen is, on the surface, a very
simple one. Sandra goes to her mother to show off her
new school uniform. Her mother is cooking with the
household’s black servant Nora. Sandra and her
mother cuddle and Sannie tells Sandra a secret – that
she has packed her blonde-haired doll Melinda in the bag so
she can take her to boarding school. Those are the bare facts
and yet re-read the scene and see how it brilliantly and
subtly introduces certain key themes.
- The ambiguity (uncertainty) about Sandra’s parentage.
- The notion of secrets and lies.
