Introduction
Skin is a story containing great sadness, but it is also a tale of survival – one that exposes the futility of racial discrimination and the bankruptcy – both moral and scientific – of attempting to draw distinctions about people based on the colour of their skin.
This growing resource-bank is designed to explore Skin not only as a rich film-text deserving of detailed examination, but also as a launch pad into the history of South Africa and some of the origins of its racist policies and pseudo-science. It is also a fascinating means of addressing issues of genetics, memory and shifting South African context in which Sandra’s life has been played out.
