Nate Conference 2011

Event information

Film Education's Julie Green and Emma Bull took two workshop sessions to the National Association for the Teaching of English annual conference, Evolving English, held in London. The workshops were held on February 25th 2011 as part of a weekend-long CPD event for teachers and education practitioners. Approximately forty teachers attended across the two sessions.

Date: 25th February 2011
Venue: National Association for the Teaching of English, London.

This training explored:

  • Picturacy (KS2)
  • Film and the English Classroom (KS3/4)

Film Education's Picturacy series takes the 'word, sentence, text' approach to literacy further by exploring the relationship between shot, sequence and text on film. This session explored key how film concepts can be used to help children develop a greater understanding of narrative structure and representation of character, as well as developing creativity in combining images, music and text to create multimedia texts.

This interactive session considered 'the film of the book' and beyond, offering approaches to the moving image in English designed to improve learning and enliven lessons. Using a selection of resources from Film Education's extensive back catalogue, the session offered a range of ideas for practical and effective classroom application of film texts.

All attendees received a selection of Film Education resources to take away and use with their classes.

Our training events focus on giving teachers information and guidance on using film in education. Alongside the digital video training we offer nationwide, we also organise regional INSET days, which can help teachers with any level of experience get to grips with using film within the curriculum.
