Shakespeare on film
Introduction
The 2010 GCSE English Literature specifications require students to
experience a performance of a Shakespeare play alongside close study of
the text. The accessibility of film makes this a popular choice for
many teachers. Consequently, an appreciation of how filmmakers approach
Shakespeare’s plays has become particularly relevant for teachers of
English for whom it may previously have been regarded as an additional
extra.
This topic-based resource aims to introduce teachers and students to a range of themes and concepts that underpin an appreciation of how and why filmmakers revisit Shakespeare with such apparent regularity. It is designed to complement Film Education’s new DVD resources for KS3 and KS4 Filming Shakespeare.
